About AusBusiness.net
Practical, plain-English guides for people starting and running a small business in Australia, and for people building their careers.
AusBusiness.net has been publishing for Australian small business owners since 2009. In October 2026 we relaunched the site with a new set of guides, each written from scratch and checked against official sources such as business.gov.au, the ATO, ASIC, the ACCC and Fair Work.
What you'll find here
Each guide covers one topic properly, in the order you'll actually deal with it, and links to the official source for the detail. We cover:
- Start a business: Testing an idea, writing a plan, choosing a structure, registering and funding a new business.
- Money & finance: Bookkeeping, cash flow and financial planning for small business owners.
- Marketing & sales: Finding and keeping customers: marketing plans, advertising, SEO, email, social media, sales and service.
- Online & technology: Websites, online stores, professional email, AI tools and keeping your business data safe.
- Hiring & managing people: Hiring your first employee, recruiting good staff, leadership and workplace safety.
- Careers & jobs: Choosing a career, changing careers, finding a job, resumes, interviews and qualifications.
- Running the business: Contracts and legal basics, and making your business more sustainable.
- Industry guides: Practical guides for specific kinds of business, from cafés to trades and cleaning.
How we write our guides
- Practical and Australian. Written for Australian businesses, using Australian rules, terms and examples.
- Checked against official sources. Every guide lists its sources and the date each one was checked.
- Reviewed regularly. We review guides on money and legal topics every six months and the rest every twelve months. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of each guide shows when it was last checked.
- General information, not advice. Our guides explain your options and who can help. They don't take your circumstances into account, so they're no substitute for advice from an accountant, lawyer or other licensed professional. See our disclaimer.
Advertising and independence
The site is free to read and is supported by advertising from Google AdSense. Advertisers don't choose or influence what we write, and an ad on a page is not a recommendation.
- Sponsored articles are clearly labelled, and are edited and fact-checked to the same standards as everything else.
- Partner products. Where we mention a business we have a commercial relationship with, we say so on the page.
- No paid links. We don't sell links inside our guides, and payment never buys a positive mention.
