Ever tried to find an alternative to the wide spread of USB thumb drives? Here it is! This article will show you how to store your computer files inside your normal GMail mail box. It is GMail Drive.

Store your files with Gmail!

There is a small application that allows you to store your files inside your existing gmail account. It’s called Gmail Drive. It’s been around for a number of years and proved to be quite a stable solution.

GMail Drive

“GMail Drive” creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n'drop files to.

To set it up, you need

  1. GMail email account –  use your existing GMail account or get a new one.
  2. GMail Shell Extension

So, there you are. Once installed, you’ll see “Gmail drive” inside your “My Computer”. When you copy a file there, it sends an email to your gmail account with this file as an attachment (you can see that email in your gmail inbox). It keeps the directory structure and you can download files using Gmail drive or login to Gmail and download the attachment (which will also be virus checked!).

Why use it? This is one of the best things out there. Instead of marking around with USB thumb drives, your files are always accessible from any location where you can connect to the internet.
