Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of premature death and disease in Australia. Visit www.quitnow.info.au to see what you can do to stop smoking.
What’s Really in a Cigarette?
The average cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals, and 60 of which are cancer causing.
Obviously the most well known ingredient in a cigarette is nicotine. Nicotine alters chemicals in the brain, and bonds them with nicotine. This is why people become addicted to cigarettes because their brain starts to depend on them. Nicotine also increased the heart rate and blood pressure, which is a sign that the body is trying to absorb more oxygen than is present in cigarette smoke. Nicotine has often been referred to as more addictive then heroin, and in its pure form is extremely dangerous, with as single drop enough to kill a man.
Cigarette Chemicals
Below is a list of the less significant main chemicals into a cigarette. There are many thousands more but these are some of the most significant ones.
- Hydrogen Cyanide – a very dangerous gas used in execution chambers
- Carbon monoxide – a poisonous gas found in car exhaust fumes and other things.
- Formaldehyde – used as disinfectant and embalming fluid
- Benzene –a toxic petrol additive and industrial solvent
- Methanol – a poisonous alcohol used in anti-freeze
- Polonium – highly radioactive and toxic element
- Ammonia – a strong alkali used as a refrigerant
- Acetone – a solvent used in nail-polish remover
- Radon – a carcinogenic radioactive gas
- Butane – a flammable gas used as fuel
- Toluene – an industrial solvent
- Arsenic – a common poison
- Tar – used in road surfacing
The various tobacco companies use different ingredients in their cigarettes. Thankfully the governments are constantly bringing in new laws which limit the amount to additives and extra ingredients that tobacco companies add into their cigarettes. It had been previously found that companies were adding chemicals which made the user much more addicted than they would have been without the chemicals being added.
