NAPLAN Tests – Assessing Literacy and Numeracy

National Assessment Program of Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests were introduced in 2008 for all Australian school children in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.  The testing is devised of four separate tests that assess reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.   The purpose of these tests is to have a National standardized testing protocol  to determine the level a child is functioning at in order to provide clear measures of improvement in learning outcomes.  The government specifically would like these measures to be the basis of improving learning outcomes for all children as it enables measures to be transparent.  In addition NAPLAN Online facilitates open discussions through the establishment of a discussion forum for students, parents and educators.

NAPLAN Practice Tests

NAPLAN Practice TestsNAPLAN Online (www., is a website that offers anyone the opportunity to take an original test by simply clicking on the applicable year (either 3, 5, 7 or 9) and selecting the topic eg Numeracy.  Then at the end of the test(s), the student, or their parents, are able to receive an online list of their result(s), which they can use to support their study.  This is particularly useful for preparation for upcoming national testing.  Furthermore registered users will  also be able to receive a detailed PDF report (displaying his/her name and school) at the end of their test(s), clearly showing their highest test results across subject areas as they are achieved.

Preparation for NAPLAN 2010 Tests

NAPLAN online also offers the opportunity to participate in their online courses for registered users.  For example if you choose the numeracy courses you can then select from the different mathematics modules, which include numbers, measurement, space algebra and working mathematically.  This is an excellent resource to enable children to develop their knowledge and skills required to prepare them for testing but more importantly for developing mathematical skills for life.

Naplan tests are on this week. Are your kids ready?

  • Jodie

These literacy and numeracy practice tests are very good. At least the kids will know what they are up against..

  • User

Is there a reason why only years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed by NAPLAN?

  • Nina Drake

My kids download NAPLAN practice test papers and doing them now. It’s kind of fun and they will feel much better when they have to do the actual test at school next year.

  • Roby D

Yeah, Naplan online lets you download sample tests to help your children practice and get ready for the actual test next year. A good tip, though, is – don’t tell your child that this is the test they’ll have to do, just use the worksheets in an informal way..
