Making an introduction between two associates seems like a simple mundane task. However, the reality is more of us do not use these type of introductions to our advantage. You and your company might not benefit immediately, but by making an introduction that helps others, can help you in the future. Introductions happen regularly at various social situations or networking events, but making a proper professional introduction is a challenge.
Your job when introducing people is to make it easy for each person to respond and share information. Do your homework! This means even if you know the two people you are introducing personally, Do you know their official title at rank at their job? What can you offer about one of the people to lighten the mood that can provide an instant interaction? For example, “This Is Joe Smith, the vice president of sales and advertising at John Doe associates. He is also a huge football fan, so go easy on him after last night’s loss by the Giants!” Right there you will be inviting the other associate to respond with their thought on last night’s game or offer a little poke at the person for following a losing team. Of course you will want to make sure that both people you are introducing are football fans, but the point is to research a common interest and bring it up early in the conversation. This could be as simple as discussing an upcoming snowstorm.
During a formal introduction, be sure to use full names. Do not use a person’s nick name even if that is what is commonly used. Plus some people’s nick names are not what their contact information says and could lead to confusion. It is also considered polite to introduce the highest executive first. This is a sign of respect to their position and will provide the lesser executive a chance to offer a “pleasure to meet someone of your stature.” Also, keep in mind personal titles, such as Mr, and Mrs.
While an introduction is very short, it is very important to do it right. This will require some research on your part, but it is time well spent. Making a great introduction will leave a good lasting impression about you in the two people you are connecting minds with. Take pride in creating a working relationship between people and being involved in the process from the beginning.
